I know I could not have said it better myself, dear Rambi, as I was making a vain attempt when I saw your post. Thank you.

Rambling, eh? Not hardly! <VBG>

Your points are well taken, dear, and I shall think about them. BTW, if my comments might have been taken as insulting or provocative, it was not my intent; I truly meant only that it felt eerie watching. You know, there are times when I rather wish that SI Bob could turn this whole thread down for a day so that we could all appreciate what a special place it is.

Your sharing what happened to you on the original thread certainly strikes a chord for me and, I am sure, for lots of us. It is really astonishing how differently a posting can be read by different people and how differently from the poster's intent. That you should be subjected to bad mouthing is amazing, but anything is possible!

As for the adrenaline rush that goes with verbal jousting, it can be great fun in an argument. I have felt it myself when engaging Terry in a free-for-all; but Terry and I remain friends in the midst of a spirited debate. I imagine that some people feel it in the midst of more personal scuffles as well, although I just start to feel sick. It is worthwhile to remember that I am only myself and that my reactions are not everyone's. Thank you.

<<and I did some silly thing that totally offended the threadmistress who decided I was white trash, (does this sound sort of like laving??) and I left the thread after being called a lot of names. I was badmouthed even after I left-- I never did figure the whole thing out and was stunned at the depth of hatred and resentment this person had apparently held for me. >>

M. could be a little snooty at times. She and Jenghis got together and went dancing. Best of friends and then they had a spat. That went from thread to PMs to e-mail for better than a year. In the end each would up with great respect for the other but neither would take the first step.

When I first signed on at SI, I was mostly a lurker for a very long time, largely because I was working in Unix. While its Lynx/Pine/Tin systems make for blazingly fast browsing, they do not lend themselves to pleasant care-free posting (an understatement). Every day after I'd had my fill of the schlock scam of a stock thread I had been following, I'd head over to the Coffee Shop, Feelies, Galt, GOOFies, Quintex, etc. Then came Politically Incorrect and DAR and some others. I lurked at them all. I came to feel that I knew you all as friends. I took genuine interest in your 3D comings and goings, including your families, your pets, your investment strategies, your philosophies, your outlooks on life, and so on. At the time, I really wanted to chime in on the discussions. You all were so creative and witty. Wonderfully original thinkers and writers all! (No names, because I'd hate to leave someone out, and all your posts can still, after all, be found on those threads.) Over all that time, none of you had any way of knowing I was out there. So I did the next best thing and then I showed up at the original SI beach party in 3D. Was that a blast, or what!?

<disclaimer> Don't believe them! I did NOT eat THAT much durian!
