Evans statement that 10 of the top computer manufacturers including Compaq,Dell,H P,IBM,Sony and NEC will all be shipping computers with biometric features by June has to really raise some eyebrows in the investment community.

A few more comments . . .

We actually got a new pricing detail in that article with the comment that the "under $20" price is available at the 10,000 unit order threshold.

As to the top ten all shipping biometric product, they certainly aren't all going to be OEMing it. And some, like Sony, Fujitsu, and NEC, are competitors. Of the others, you are probably seeing a Keytronic keyboard bundled with a Dell, etc., computer.

Good work by Isit4real in getting even the loony fringe in touch with IDX, so they won't be quite as loony.

15 AOL Disks

Hi Jean.....I knew you were still around!

Here is a neat clip from that article....

McDonald believes a similar program will be used by the federal government beginning with all e-commerce transactions, using biometrics as the primary method of identifying users. He may be right. END.

I agree...except it will be the Credit Card companies that will push the technology......and the government will be left behind.

I assume that I will soon hand this PC over to one of my children...and my next machine will be an $800 web device....hooked up to my ATT cable jack. I will sit at my home theater TV...and surf. The keyboard will have a special key that just says "shop"......much like the new Compaqs have a special key that says "internet"

And if I wait just a while longer...the keyboard will come with a scanner....all of them will.....Bio-Appi will be the standardization.

Just a thought....I'll bet I have received 15 AOL disks free in the mail....even though I can't use AOL here..... I think AOL spends about $50 to get every new customer.

So I think with E-Tail sales next Christmas expected to go from $4 billion to $20 billion....with almost all of it on credit cards.....we should be looking for the "issue" of on-line credit card fraud being front and center. Whispers are that on-line credit card fraud is many times worse than bricks and mortar. How is this going to be handled?

Credit card companies can't have their fraud rate triple......there is not enough room in their business model...or the E-Tailers business model to eat those kinds of losses.....and the comsumers must pay....we all know that. It is a tough situation....really.

I think IDX clearly has the solution....and that for $8.00..... Credit card companies may wish to "invest" in their own future......by paying for these readers to be handed out for free...or by funding the OEMs inclusion of a reader on every new keyboard.

American Express Blue has done this......I think banks are ready to do this.....But I think the credit card companies will really need to get together...and work with the E-Tailers....and OEMs.

The privacy issue will just have to be faced...and blown over. Security concerns should overshadow Ratman.....and people do not have to participate....as with airport security...they can always take a bus.

So I hope we will hear of a day coming soon, where little index finger scanners are just on every keyboard.....compliments of Mastercard and Visa....and that nobody ever has to worry about finding one...because they come in their junk mail about every 3 months or so.

bg

ps. Estimates from the smart card industry are for 4.7 Billion smart cards by 2002......up from 240 million now. Hmmmmm.
