In the earnings light, I am trying to figure out how they will handle the effective date of the handset sale.

This is irrelevant. QCOM will report earnings as they have in the past with earnings as reported in SEC filings and as pro forma or how they would have been, given no handset division.

The only problem is that sites like Yahoo Finance show reported earnings and not pro forma earnings so the PEs are all skewed. For investors and institutions, pro forma earnings are what matter.
