You are absolutely right about vacation nightmares. A vacation lasts a lifetime and most of the laughs and conversations are about things that weren't part of the plan.

We have a small travel business and get the odd call from Paris or Timbuktu from clients demanding that we "do something" about really crappy CNN reception, or the like. Some people should just stay home.

It might not be a bad idea to send couples on a two-week foreign trip together BEFORE the wedding. Why wait years before saying, "I don't even KNOW you! You're not the person, I married."

I was in Switzerland once and feeling kind of poopy, so I went into a shop and asked for some vitamins. Got a tube of wafers that looked like Tums, or something, only twice the size. I figured they were chewables.

One bite and there was a foamy explosion in my mouth. Impossible to swallow so you open your mouth. You can see the picture. It seems the things were meant to be dissolved in water, like Alka-Seltzer.

I immediately went back and bought a second tube so I could offer them to friends and family when I got home. My daughter's I'll-try-anything-Lab was particularly spectacular as she tried to eat the whole thing.

Japan is fabulous but does not encourage visits by foreigners (bidnessmen are OK). Almost never see a "Visit Japan" ad in a travel mag -- at best, it will be a short stay as part of an Asian Tour package.

Happy trails -- M
