Surface and sub-surface arteries and veins would bleed profusely. However, if the aorta is cut there is not much blood being pumped through the other arteries. The blood from the aorta would take the path of least resistance and that would be the abdomen.

I think the killer was buying an insurance policy when he cut her throat. She was already dead.
