It can be reasonably argued that the ericy deal was a catalyst for recognition of the gorilla, not of its gorilla status per se.

Good point. But if the Gorilla power was already in place, I think it's almost impossible to reasonably refute that the Ericsson deal added greater strength to the Gorilla's muscles.

The current size of the power and optoelectronics semiconductor device markets exceed $15 billion per year.

But... this underestimates the market potential for CREE's products since they will be able to perform functions previously not performed with semiconductor devices.

One possibility: lighting long fiberoptic cables.

If we take it to the extreme: light bulbs. (but I not counting on this anytime soon!)
