Betty: Last night, I went to EDIG's website and revisited all the PR and news listed there. Reading carefully this time.... I felt so much better after that. One thing I learned from last night, which I think could contribute to this board since I don't recall seeing anyone elaborate on it is: The VoiceTime alliance with IBM is clearly pointing toward the importance of the MicroOS. (The member firms all serve a purpose to the alliance. The following are from FAQ of the VoiceTIme website: ------------------------------------------------------ Q: What does IBM bring to VoiceTIMES? A: IBM brings 30 years of voice research and enterprise systems design expertise to the allaince. IBM brings resources and technologies in multiple areas including the following: In the area of ViaVoice Technology: Evaluation / testing for VoiceTIMES member?s mobile devices Customization of ViaVoice Technologies when required ViaVoice transcription extensions Batch enrollment Command & Control Development of new standard APIs as defined by the VoiceTIMES members In the area of Standardization and implementation: Compression and reconstruction technologies File formats C/S protocols Reference Implementations Toolkit for customization (upon request) Q: What does Intel bring to VoiceTIMES? A: Intel brings a multitude of benefits to VoiceTIMES including these three key benefits. 1) One strategic objective of the VoiceTIMES initiative is to identify the technologies required for mobile enterprise solutions. Intel & IBM have identified several key occupational scenarios and will jointly conduct research to define the requirements for how people will use mobile devices in these occupations. An example is expanding the use of mobile devices for the Medical Industry. 2) Intel also brings their expertise in processor design to identify and help define future processing requirements for handheld devices. Their current StrongARM strategy will allow VoiceTIMES members to take advantage of new technology and help define new mobile processing requirements. 3) As VoiceTIMES members develop enterprise solutions, the processing power of the server will become a critical element for natural language understanding, accessing information from both the internet and intranets, and voice recognition. VoiceTIMES members having insight into Intel?s server processing strategies will allow them to easily integrate voice into their applications running in a server environment. Q: What do the other companies bring to VoiceTIMES? A: Companies such as Olympus, Dictaphone, Philips, and e.Digital bring their expertise in digital device development, while companies such as Norcom and Dictaphone have a substantial understanding of customer environments and opportunities pertaining to the mobile environment. --------------------------------------------------------- IBM brings their partner Norcom along to the VoiceTime plus the fact that Dictaphone is also a member, which could means IBM is not interested in EDIG's dictation/voice recorder expertise. And I am suspecting that Intel might be the one suggested that EDIG should be on board, since Intel and EDIG has been working together before VoiceTime. Just like JimC stated, the biggest potential for EDIG is their MicroOS, and all the big brother alliance is pointing toward the microOS. Lucent and TI would have picked bigger player like Diamond for their ePAC/DSP solution. VoiceTime's member each make sence for the alliance as far as the size and expertise they mean to the alliance; except for Norcom and EDIG. Norcom is understandable since they are IBM's partner for ViaVoice. Why is EDIG there if not for their MicroOS???!!!!!
