Would he have known where she was taking the keys? Had he ever borrowed a university car? And of course she needn't have exited through Phelps Gate onto College St at all. It's just as likely that she'd have turned round and gone back the way she'd come.

Two unrelated points:

1. What about that 911 call? Who made it? Is that known? Surely the police have 911 on automatic trace, so they'd have learned at least what number it was dialed from.

2. The killer/s made no effort to conceal the body. They must have been aware that it'd be found quickly. This suggests that they had no obvious tie to the victim: the believed they had plenty of time to get away, and weren't worried that the police would come to question them as soon as the body was discovered. This tends to support the theory of a random killing.
