You are right that in todays supply constrained atmosphere, this is not relevant. It is also irrelevant to the Athlon vs Coppermine issue, which is going to decide AMD future.

But six months ago in the demand constrained atmosphere, the low cost Celeron ( and its low cost packaging), derailed the AMD tactic of "20 to 40 percent cheaper than Intel", and limited the AMD market share.
