Finally saw the WSW special with the 4 guests who picked their favorite stocks for 2000. Byrini and Dessaur(sp)picked CPQ. Each person picked from about 6 to 12 stocks. Other high tech stocks chosen were AOL, MSFT, INTC, and IOM. I did not hear SUNW, LSI(although LSI was one of last year's picks)CSCO, DELL, etc. mentioned. The Oriental gentleman, I believe his name may have been Kim, picked LU, which has since gone down the pipes. Many of the stocks picked were large cap stocks and many are currently beaten down. Very few if any high-flying internet stocks were chosen. I guess this is a pretty shabby recap. I shoulda taped it and been more accurate here. El

FWIW, I think the whole "internet speed" thing is overrated. I'm a proponent of "fast followers". It's what made MSFT a huge success, AOL is excellent at it, and you have to remember that the first, or fastest, is not always the winner. It is those who approach business intelligently and make the right decisions. Timing IS important, but not as much as good decisions.
CPQ makes most of its bucks from B2B. B2B is all profit-oriented, unlike B2C, since B2C is more interested in market share, hence willing to cut prices. This isn't as true in the B2B realm. So far, I'd say MC has made astute decisions that will pay off handsomely.
