Glenn,

Basically, it means that the video is "letter-boxed" with black bars above and below the image on a standard TV/monitor -- so the format is just as it was in movie theatres, without the ends "cut off" as normally happens (a bit) when shown on a TV

By the way, the DTS sound feature (which this has) is AWESOME! DTS is uncompressed "pure" digital audio. Amazing stuff. When you get a chance, get Dances with Wolves and listen to it in Dolby Surround...THEN turn on DTS and listen; it's noticeably better; wonderful, wonderful sound.

(when I first got my DVD and new amp, I thought I was listening to DTS and said "hey! really good!"...then I realized that I didn't have the DTS "turned on." So I got it working and...whoa! Even better :)
