her friends might have considered hitchhiking one thing, and being "picked up" another, if you follow ... I agree with you here.

But a different question:
the witness who saw the victim after peter Stein did hasn't got high credibility with you. Do you consider the story could have been made up to constitute an alibi for someone the witness knows? To place SJ in a place where she could not have been murdered at the time when she actually was in a different place with her killer?

Do you propose to try and follow this direction?
