Ted, I think Intel knew what was up and that is why they offered GTW the deal. Advance denial of market.
Intel also knew they were rushing the development pipeline of their products because the Athlon wasa threat. That is why they erred so badly. With no Athlon all those problems would have been found before release and we would be in a 450-500 Mhz universe at this time. Instead we are in the 800+ area and Intel is scrambling to keep up.(not keep ahead, they are not ahead now, their "releases" of new CPUs are false as the products do not exist in any marketable quantity).
Intel knew very well there would be a shortage and failed to advise various players. Intel denied it and use circumlocution to try to extricate itself from blame.
Well it was AMDs fault.
