I think I see where you're going with this: Suzanne planned to call Jim as soon as she got home. Since she thought, and perhaps hoped, that he'd want to see her to discuss the thesis, she kept the car keys, in case she needed to drive to his apartment or his office to meet with him.

But then she returned the keys, which suggests that no plans were made that necessitated her having a car. If any plans were made at all.
