QUEEN JOINS NET FRENZY
EXCLUSIVE

By BILL COLES
Royal Reporter

THE Queen has joined the Internet gold rush by sinking œ100,000 into an exciting new "dot com" firm.

She dipped into her fortune to buy a five per cent stake in the Millennium Mapping Company, which is building up a complete aerial photo of the UK.

It is believed to be the first time the Royals have tried to make a mint by helping a business get off the ground.

But investment analysts were last night marvelling at the Queen's shrewd punt. She is one of just 41 private backers in the firm.

And if, as expected, Millennium Mapping becomes listed on the Stock Exchange in a couple of years she should see her money at least DOUBLE.

A senior adviser with bankers HSBC said: "This could turn out to be a remarkably good investment.

"Millions are putting their money into the dot com revolution. The prices of Internet firms are soaring. I would expect this mapping firm to go public, and with Internet start-ups the sky's the limit." Many other Net firms have seen their share price soar, but last week some fell sharply.

The price of Web provider Easynet has risen more than eight times in the last year, while Freeserve and Computacenter have more than tripled. The Queen paid for her stake through the Privy Purse late last year. It is funded mainly from the Duchy of Lancaster.

The makers of the Millennium Map cannily dedicated their site to the Queen. For the past eight months, they have had aircraft photographing the country. The colour pictures are so detailed, a human head can be picked out. The map will feature all the nation's 20million homes. Special prints will be put on sale.

The whole of England should be on the site- www.millennium-map.com - by the end of the month.
