CREE's only functional products right now are LED's, whose market potential at this time is too small to create a
full-fledged Simian, and fake diamonds ('nuff said).

Not strictly correct. See the post about CREE's power MESFET being named one of the products of the year in Microwave and RF trade mag.

The application is in PCS base stations where it replaces numerous other Silicon based power devices (and probably a bank of cooling fans). This is the kind of application that can create a true tornado as the winds are strong in wireless these days and this device is a discontinuous innovation in this space.

With all due respect to this board (as a new poster) the question as to whether cree is a gorilla is an interesting academic one...from my personal investment point of view it is just a question of time. I don't think intel or microsoft would have met the criteria when they were in their early stages. It is also a big mistake to think of cree as an LED company...what they are is the leading producer of enabling SiC solutions. I suggest all on this board go to their web site to understand why the dominant player in SiC technology will become a gorilla and probably within a year. As i posted earlier, there is absolutely no one else on the horizon who is even in contention for the simian crown so it is not a question of if but when. As to market size of SiC products, it is in the billions but how many, no one knows as cree's SiC devices are enabling new applications every day. An example would be power supply for radar. with cree's SiC, the govt could develop a lightweight continuous 360 radar image elminating the sweep that is currently used. right there...an entire industry is transformed due to the new functionality not previously possible.

As a new comer to this board, i will not push the point as to whether cree qualifies as a gorilla or not...we can pick this up a year from now when they are...but the shares will also commesurately be a lot higher. I would appreciate guidance as to whether gorillas in waiting should be discussed here.

And, yes, Uncle West is almost correct in confirming that i indeed am the guy who bought MSFT at the IPO...it was not at the IPO (I did not have the connections to get an allocation) but two days later after the stock went down a point below the offering price! In hindsight, it is really incredible to think that the greatest gorilla IPO of all time not only didn't triple but went down slightly! But then again in those days, everyone I knew thought i was nuts to own such an unproven and speculative company that traded at such a huge multiple (around 50 if i recall correctly).

I also could only afford 1k shares (25k) at that point. But that investment has made it possible to assemble a very much larger position in cree which i expect to be worth 25x it's current valuation in 5 years.
