Charles...

There is really no other way to do the online bidding... The proxy bidding benefits both the buyer and seller. Unless all buyers can be there at the same time(which isn't practical for an online auction) there aren't many other options. Probably doesn't matter with Sun servers, but it is usually best to start an auction which has a reserve at ~10% of the reserve price. It is good to get some players in at a lower price which may generate some competitiveness among the early bidders. Your observation is right though, most good stuff does go in the last few minutes of the auction. It's called sniping, waiting till the last minute and bidding high, hopefully catching the other bidders of guard and unable to get another bid in above the current high bid prior to the end of the auction. Yes the seller may not get the top price if another bidder wanted to bid, but that is what the reserve is for. Ebay and online auctions are changing everything for antique collectors and sellers. Sellers do not have to have any knowledge or expertise and will get a respectable price. It used to be that a seller may not be able to easily get good information on how to price an item, which usually resulted in the seller, throwing thier hands in the air and pricing the item double or triple what was paid for the item and placing the item in thier store or antique mall.

I've sold a bit on Ebay. Antiques can be very lucrative, just as stocks are. One of my good finds was a marble female nude sculpture which was the seller thought was probably just a cast item. Paid $67.50... sold for $1200.00(not on ebay). Hmmmm, reminds me of Sun profits... <g>

Cheers,

Roger
