Every opposing force should be considered a threat to MSFT. Competition is always a threat and will remain so in any free market, unless the DOJ decides that Communism is preferred in Corporate America. As far as any significant impact, I'd like to point out a few things that seem to indicate MSFT's revenue stream will continue to grow rapidly: - More and more people are buying PC's, many are not computer literate enough to use Linux yet and Linux is not intuitive enough for the masses (yet). - The life-cycle of a PC is very short, so people continue to upgrade at a fairly rapid pace. A lot of times an upgrade will include another purchase of the OS because the purchaser may not want to just throw the other PC away, or may sell it. - Microsoft has a proven track record of turning their business plan on a dime, embracing any emerging technology in some way though not always successfully; we all fail at times. - Microsoft has the persistence to keep going when the going gets tough, as is the case for Windows CE. Personally I still feel that CE is a far superior platform and will eventually be more widely accepted. - Microsoft is fearless in that they will try anything and not be to humiliated when it doesn't quite work as planned. They'll just turn around and keep on going in another direction. The screeches will not be caught at an impasse. - There has been a lot of hype lately about Linux running Windows. That's all fine and dandy, but it also requires a licensed copy of windows which in turn means people must buy it, so this isn't a threat at all but quite a blessing. I rarely speak and still consider myself quite an amateur since I've missed the fortunes many have made. I keep trying different investment styles but the ones that seem to work always seem to be the easiest... Buy and hold! Fear not, for Microsoft will not let us down. Today they settled with Caldera, probably just to keep them quiet. And what a settlement that was. A one time charge for less than 10% of the original claim made by Caldera. Hopefully a sign of things to come. Scott, sinking again to the depths of lurking.
