SUN MICROSYSTEMS, INC. UNVEILS JAVA(TM) 2 PLATFORM, MICRO EDITION CD TO
ADDRESS RAPIDLY GROWING CONSUMER APPLIANCE DEVICE APPLICATION
Development Complete Package of Tools Offered to Developers Enrolled
in the Sun Developer Essentials(SM) Subscription, as Part of the Sun
Developer Connection(SM) Program

SEATTLE, Jan 10, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Sun Microsystems,
Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today unveiled the availability of the Sun
Developer Essentials(SM) Java(TM) 2 Platform, Micro Edition CD --
targeted specifically for developers of applications for Sun's consumer
and embedded technologies. Expanding its highly successful Sun
Developer Connection(SM) Program, Sun is focusing upon a new market of
developers -- developers of applications for high-volume consumer
appliances. Sun is making the CD available as a technology access
resource to developers enrolled in the Sun Developer Essentials
subscription, and is pricing the CD at a nominal fee. Sun made the
announcement here at the Sun Technology Days developer conference.

The contents of the CD draw from the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition --
a highly optimized Java runtime environment targeting a wide range of
consumer products, including pagers, cellular phones, screenphones,
digital set-top boxes and car navigation systems. The recently released
Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition addresses the needs of developers for
small footprint devices -- devices where the other Java 2 Platforms,
Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition, are not appropriate for a
particular developer's device application focus.

"The Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition CD is designed to provide
developers with one-stop shopping for development tools,
specifications, and documentation," said, Curtis Sasaki, director,
Consumer & Embedded, Sun Microsystems. "With the CD there is no need to
scour the Internet hunting for documentation or tools or have to worry
about multiple licenses and fees. A developer building content for
consumer appliances can now be immediately up and running on Java 2
Platform, Micro Edition -- and be ready to create the next killer app."

Developers enrolled in the Sun Developer Essentials (DE) subscription,
one of the available software subscriptions in the Sun Developer
Connection Program, now have access to a complete software toolkit as
they develop applications for palm pilots, set-top boxes, wireless,
screen phones, car and personal digital assistant (PDAs) devices, etc.
The CD is loaded with new Sun technologies, including:
-- PersonalJava(TM) technology
-- Java Embedded Server(TM) software
-- Java Card(TM) technology
-- Jini(TM) Connection technology
-- K Virtual Machine, and
-- Java TV(TM) technology.

Additionally, the CD includes select third-party tools. Sun chose these
best-of-breed technologies to complement its own technology and provide
a comprehensive solution. All said, Consumer and embedded application
developers can now utilize one CD that pulls from the numerous
technologies available via the Sun Developer Connection Program.

The Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition CD is available as a two-year
subscription, updated semi-annually, and is priced at $39.95. Updates
are automatic, providing developers with the latest software and
information.

Sun provides an end-to-end solution for linking consumer products to
