EPSON Expands Operating System Support for Its Market-Leading LCD Controllers; Joins Wind River Systems' WindLink for Tornado Partner Program 08:06 a.m. Jan 10, 2000 Eastern VANCOUVER, B.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 10, 2000--EPSON Research and Development Inc. (ERD), the market leader for embedded graphics LCD controllers, Monday announced controller support for the VxWorks(R) real-time operating system (RTOS), the run-time component of the Tornado(TM) I embedded development platform from Wind River Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age. EPSON has expanded its strategy to develop support for a variety of leading real-time operating systems. The VxWorks RTOS is the first in a long line slated for EPSON LCD controller support. EPSON has joined the Wind River Systems WindLink(TM) for Tornado(TM) Partner Program and begun development of drivers to support the Universal Graphics Library (UGL). UGL is the cornerstone for Wind River's graphics solutions. UGL support allows EPSON's controllers to work with Wind River's Zinc(TM) for VxWorks, Personal JWorks(TM) product and eNavigator/HTMLWorks(TM) Graphical User Interfaces. At present, EPSON's SED1354, SED1355 and SED1356 graphics controllers are supported, with the remainder of the SED13xx product line scheduled to be added by the end of January 2000. "Today's announcement launches EPSON's aggressive agenda to offer embedded LCD controller support for a number of RTOSs," stated Kevin Gillett, manager in charge of driver development and OS Vendor Relations at EPSON Research & Development Inc. "This relationship is a major springboard that demonstrates our commitment to a variety of operating systems requiring embedded graphics support. "As a WindLink partner, EPSON has a significant role in building comprehensive solutions for growing markets," said Dave Sheaffer, director of corporate product marketing for Wind River Systems. "This partnership will help EPSON develop and penetrate new industries to increase overall business while enhancing VxWorks graphics capabilities." The Tornado development platform consists of three integrated components: the Tornado suite of tools, a set of cross-development tools and utilities; the VxWorks run-time system, a scalable RTOS; and a number of host-target communications options, such as Ethernet, serial line, in circuit emulator (ICE) and ROM emulator. The WindLink for Tornado Partner Program is focused on helping hardware and software developers, system integrators, and consultants create and sell products and services that complement or are integrated with Tornado tools and the VxWorks RTOS. Sample code for the UGL drivers is slated to be available in Q1 '00 from EPSON and provided royalty free. About EPSON Research and Development Inc.
