Zicam Shortage

Michigan and much of the nation are under siege from a super flu, and suffering people are scrambling for relief. As a result, there's been an all-out rush at local drugstores for a product that promises to shorten the misery of the cold and flu.

It's the cold and flu season and hospital emergency rooms all around metro Detroit are been inundated with sick people. But the one thing that can stop a cold virus in its tracks is Zicam. If taken at the first sign of symptoms, it can cut the duration from about 10 days to one. But good luck buying it -- stores can't seem to keep it in stock.

The first shortage of Zicam "right after their paper came out showing how effective it was," Dr. Michael Seidman said.

That was just three or four months ago. Zicam has ionic zinc that attaches directly to the nasal cavity, preventing the virus from taking hold, and there are no known side effects like nausea and drowsiness.

"There's no doubt that it is most effective for the common cold, but people often mistake cold and flu viruses as one in the same," Dr. Seidman said.

Dr. Seidman says Zicam does have some effect on flu symptoms, but there are alternatives if you can't seem to find Zicam at your local drug store. Decongestants and antihistamines will block symptoms. Enchinachea is also recommended but only if you buy the right kind. Zinc lozenges are also tricky.

"You have to be careful because most taste terrible and those that taste good are made with things that bind the zinc...not good enough to attack the cold," Dr. Seidman said.

Aside from those remedies, get plenty of rest and fluids and eat right.

"Take as good of possible care as you can," Dr. Seidman said. "Make good lifestyle choices and try to find some Zicam."

You might not be able to find Zicam in the stores, but you can order it online. Click here to find out how.
