the overwhelming majority of index options are euro-style... i think only about 3 are american-style

After talking a bit to the Fido options team this morning, I'm more convinced that the new rules that allow spreads in cash-only accounts (eg, IRAs) but limit them to Euro-style options are an indirect way of allowing only index options to be used in those situatuations - neatly accomplishing their intent of allowing more varied hedging strategies without increasing people's portfolio risks.
