>>Are you saying that any king or prince that Frank does not include in his list should sink without a trace, and not be followed here at all?<<

I agree with Frank's approach of reducing the number of companies in the G&K Index by using criteria of classification, size, and group ownership. However, I not not think we should be so restrictive with the W&W portfolio.

The W&W should be a place to cast wider nets. To have a variety of companies worth watching for different reasons. Discussing potential, discussing why companies are improving in their march towards gorilladom or why they are falling behind is instructive and useful. Companies that have not achieved king or gorilla status, like BRCM, BVSN and VISX should be on the list. I also think companies that are "forgotten" kings or gorillas - that is, those acknowledged to have such characteristics, yet not widely held by thread participants should also be included. These companies should be monitored to see if they can use their advantages to improve their status, market shares, stock outlook, etc., and discussion about them should be encouraged.

JMHO, of course.

W & W portfolio discussion......

Cha1, Cha2, StockHawk, Justin & Board,

I was the one who suggested to Justin by PM to drop PSFT and BRCM from W&W. My rationale was different from each, in that PSFT seemed not to be losing in its space to others, based on discussion here; and because BRCM seemed fascinating but we had had little discussion here.....so it had not been justified by anyone here to have that place. And as an aside, I also recommended EXDS be included as a King, based on my presentation of EXDS in the past month.

My views:
1. We don't need to confuse things by a 3rd portfolio.
2. W&W should be composed of G&K candidates or potential but not yet determined G's & K's, which have been discussed here. This board has not been able to delineate every real or potential G & K in the Tech Universe, because of limited personnel. For example, Oracle is probably a Gorilla, but gets little play here because hardly anyone owns it, based on the Apollo Survey.

By suggesting we drop BRCM, I was really hoping that someone who owns it would describe it, teach us, and justify its position in W&W. In fact, that has been a little bit of a side agenda for me. On several occasions, I have tried to encourage the lurkers to join in because we don't have enough manpower to cover the entire universe. I have enjoyed the discussion this weekend on CREE, and would love to hear about Broadvision, Broadcom, and on and on.

So, bottom line, our GKI and W&W portfolios don't have to be the Final definition of all G's & K's in the Tech universe, but I think they should be in the portfolios because we have discussed them. By reverse logic, if we haven't discussed them, (like Oracle), then I don't think they belong there because their position cannot be justified without timely and periodic discussion.
