I'm not at a location where I can look this stuff up, but I was close enough. The 13K tax is the "self employment tax" in turbotax, and admittedly, I don't know what it includes - maybe its medicare+ss combined or something.

I am not including the approx 1.5K for medicare which people pay out here for stock options (a lot of people have small amts of stock options which augment their income).

But back on topic, again, 9K per year which is not enough. Since you have materials nearby, can you tell me how much fidelity says 9K/year equates to for a 30 year old with 35 years to retirement? A heck of a lot more than 300K, which is about what these people can expect to get out of SS if they are lucky and it doesn't go bust.

Are you saying this is outdated?

The Self-Employment Contributions Act (SECA) tax is basically the business owner's version of the FICA tax that employees pay. Like FICA, it is made up of your "contributions" to both the Social Security and Medicare programs. However, the basic tax rate for the self-employed under SECA is 15.30 percent 3/4 twice the 7.65 percent rate that employees must pay on their paychecks as FICA tax 3/4 to reflect the fact that employees pay one-half the FICA tax and employers pay the other half.
