UPC declines comment on imminent chello IPO report
AMSTERDAM, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Dutch-based cable television operator United Pan-Europe Communications NV (NasdaqNM:UPCOY - news) (UPC) repeated on Wednesday that it is considering floating its chello broadband arm, but declined to comment on a report that an announcement was imminent.

``The management is currently looking at an initial public offering of chello,' UPC spokeswoman Henrietta Hirst told Reuters but declined to comment further.

UPC, Europe's second largest cable operator, said last November it did not exclude floating chello, a high-speed Internet access service, in the first quarter of 2000.

Microsoft Corp (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news), which has a 7.8 percent stake in UPC, has an option to buy a 10 percent stake in chello broadband.

The Financial Times reported on Wednesday that UPC is expected to announce within days the initial public offering (IPO) of chello which has 107,000 subscribers in the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Norway and France.

Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and Goldman Sachs are the IPO's bankers, it added.

Since its launch in March last year, chello's subscriber growth has exceeded 190 percent. It provides cable customers with speedy 24-hour Internet access for a flat monthly fee.

Its potential market amounts to nine million homes, with a so-called triple play offering television, Internet access and telephony services.

Cable television, Internet and telecommunications operator UPC is 60-percent owned by UnitedGlobalCom (NasdaqNM:UCOMA - news). Last year UPC shares, which floated in February on the Amsterdam and Nasdaq exchanges, rose almost 338 percent.
