Yes. Selig would have looked better had he done nothing or given Rocker real punishment. I will not lie to you. I myself have felt some of the things Rocker has expressed, though I think my feelings are based more on culture/behaviour/politics than race. When I see Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farakkhan or some black drug abusing womanising inner city criminal, for example, I think "Black Trash," and feel no obligation whatever to think of them as being anything more than this. I literally think similarly when I see some boozin' wife beating potbellied snagger toothed inbred White Trash or, regardless of class standing, a racist. I judge on the basis of character. When Rocker calls some guy (a teamate no less) a "black monkey," particularly in light of our nation's legal history, he automatically enters the "White Trash" category to my way of thinking. Moreover, and I merely am being honest here with you, those who support this kind of foolishness in the name of "Free Speech" also enter the White Trash category. Surely they are free to speak as they wish, but they are not free to work in my organisation or be thought of as anything other than White Trash. There is neither class nor honour whatever in using a person's innate passive attributes as an insult. Now while I have my own prejudices (some justified, others perhaps not), I proudly support Alan Keyes for president, and would serve him however he thought best. I simply think he would do a better job in the presidency than any of the nits currently vying for the helm. This belief is based not on the colour of his skin, but upon the apparent content of his character. (This is the value system I support. Folk may disagree with it, but they have no right to demand I respect them.) Even so, were I to disagree with Keyes politically, I could not logically disagree with his race. I would instead oppose his non-passive thoughts and behaviour. When I see human scum in the streets of New York (and New York is filled with it, but so is Arkansas), I feel no need to think of it as being better than it is merely because of its colour. I would instead be more prone to consider myself not better than it. Nevertheless based upon reason, moral integrity and my worldview, I am compelled to separate myself from it, even while thinking "There, but for the grace of God, go I." This is due to a comparison of worldview as presented by behaviour. These articles of yours concerning 'thought police' and whatnot are quite a bit of hogwash in that they fail to consider the reality of human nature. Perhaps there is a central authority implementing an agenda even unto attempts to control an individual's thinking. But it is not evident in the Rocker case. Rocker apparently has challenged the public moral persona of his superiors, and therefore should those superiors think he should be punished he dang well should be punished. Moreover should homos, minorities and those who sympathise with them think of a way to punish him, then it would make complete sense that they implement it, even if it meant punishing the entire Atlanta Braves team. Rocker is not being mistreated. He threw out a bomb, man. Folk gon be throwing bombs back. That's just human NAYcha. Nobody got a dang right to call folk names with no repercussions. In fact, nobody got a dang right to speak even the truth, without suffering for it. If Rocker wants to call someone a "black monkey" without hassle, he needs to pitch his dang 95MPH balls for the friggin' Klan. (grin)
