Did you know that the fact that Cuba was a slave-holding colony was a prime reason for politicians of slave-holding states to press for the annexation of the island until the War between the States removed the motivation? Did you know that americans from Franklin and Jefferson right through to old 'Manifest Destiny' John L. O'Sullivan advocated invasion and occupation of Cuba? That they might very well have taken it then if they hadn't chosen to steal half of Mexico first? That they did in fact later take it, and effectively held it through puppets like Batista? That precious bloody little of the liberty in their fine words did they allow to trickle down to the average cubano? A lot of cubanos know. And the memory is not going to go away.
