Bob, I'm not sure what you are disagreeing with. Is it my contention that compatibility with existing applications will deter sales? I'm not saying, mind you, that it won't have early adopters, etc., but I believe the upgrade market will be somewhat muted, especially compared to Win95. That is, there are "many" waiting to upgrade, and there will be "many" deferring upgrade, or rather unhappy with the added expenses that may occur after the upgrade.

The problem for me, and I suspect others, is getting patches for applications which are no longer supported. For example, my version of WinFax pro is no longer supported, so a shift to Win2000 would require me to buy a new version. And I don't buy the latest version of everything any more, there's just not enough incentive to do so versus the cost and time involved for many applications.

I do believe that people will eventually be much happier with Win2000 (if it lives up to even 1/2 the hype) and that most computer users will eventually switch, or be switched via an OEM purchase.

I must be lucky, as my NT workstation usually runs for weeks before I reboot, sometimes months, and my Win98 generally lasts a week or two before I notice a problem. I am more concerned about it's vulnerability, however, since it's always live via my home DSL. The only time I've installed patches and created a monster was, oddly, on my Solaris workstation (2.7, no less) when my patch rendered my computer non-bootable.
