(Response to question to me on Yahoo! board regarding whether MEMS-based unit was shown)

Rick and Steve showed the 4 inch wafer (approx 100 MEMS chips per wafer I think) that we have already seen at the Yahoo! clubmembers meeting last year. They also showed the initial scanner unit that was about a 1" x 1" cube. It was the same as was previously shown at the meeting and I believe it is NOT a MEMS unit.

I didn't ask if the new cellphone unit was MEMS based but due to its size, I would guess its not (it had the 1" x 1" cube shape stated above).

(author's opinion here) One of the impressions I took from the meeting is that MVIS is not too concerned yet in miniturizing the packaging because it is currently easier to redesign and test the package while it is still large scale. I did not get the impression that it would be very difficult for MVIS to greatly shrink the package once the reference design is decided upon.

Oh, BTW forgot to mention that a questioner raised the issue of ruggedness of the unit and customer support. Rick said that the displays would be rugged (no comparison was stated but I got the impression that a VRD cellphone was being compared to a regular cellphone) as the drive unit would be MEMS based and the high scanning speed of the mirror (the moving part) tends to provide stability against shock.

As for customer support, the company is providing tech support for its current customers and any direct customers its gets but is primarily envisioning that other companies will build and sell the products incorporating RDS/VRD tech and will provide their own customer support.

A key statement worth repeating that provides insight to the company's strategy (maybe not direct quote but close):
MVIS provides patents and technology to enable partners to produce products.

Finally I forgot to mention that the IBM portable display came up. It is NOT supplied by MVIS and what was shown in the commercial is nowhere close to what IBM is selling currently. Most of the competitors' micro-LCD displays shipping now are one quarter - VGA output.

Dear Obewon: Did the name Erickson (ERICY) come up at all? I just have a gut feeling that they are doing something with ERICY. I own stock in both and while neither comes out and mentions the other it sure seems to me like they are working in parallel. JDN
