>>>I have lightened up my position by 20% today<<<

You selling will just make the march to new highs all that much sweeter...

Frank,
I have stayed with Dell for the past year, thinking it had to climb. I may as well wait for the earnings report, and if it is not what is expected I will be out. It's terribly discouraging to see the record NASDAQ numbers and sit with a stock that goes no where.
It would be nice if ML would at least do as Jim M does with Applied Materials. He doesn't beat around the bush and calls a spade a spade.

<<I will act aggressively in the coming days to possibly reduce my holdings in large percentage if Dell does not beat earnings expectations.>>

Frank, make sure that this decision is not based on emotions. I think, FWIW, GTW's warning has hurt DELL more than it did GTW, frustrating but understandable, IMO. A Q or 2 from now you may not even remember this. I hate to see you bail out of a stock at the bottom, swap your money into another stock at the top and watch them behave in opposite directions. That's even more frustrating.

Trimming down a large holding by 20% is not a bad idea, however, don't go to the other extreme.

May I suggest NOK, JDSU, VRSN, ARBA, AMGN? Pick an entry point, FWIW.

Frank:
The new Dell resembles the old Dell in one way, which is that of setting new highs about every three months
June high 44 Sept high 49 Dec high 53 Mar high (58 est?)
July low 33 Aug low 38 Oct low 43 Jan low=?( 43)?
Conclusion. We seem to be at a low , with a potential high
of ~58 coming up ( I would guess in Feb earnings run-up).
(to be expected when company growing 40 to 50 % /yr)
As far as moving out of Dell somewhat, I tried that in 1997 and
1998 and it failed. The crums I picked could not keep up with Dell, I moved the money back each time one failed - thus ended up 97% Dell
in Dec 1998.
It took a trigger to put me back to work, make a change, and that
happened in May when I had to sell some 7000 Dell because the broker
changed the margin from 70% to 50%.
I have never regreted doing that( building up Qcom Jdsu etc),
because all summer and fall the bears have cranked Dell up and down
and every 3 months I would have been close to a margin call!
Its also a sweet revenge on the Dell bears who have apparently
(check Dells price action during options expiration week) manipulated the stock mercilessly. The yellow-bellied chickens don't fool around much with Qcom or Jdsu because thats too dangerous a game, at least
in the near future.
Good luck
Sig

Frank,

re: "See much better possibilities elsewhere."

Agreed.

But don't leave your money out of the casino for long. I think Dell is within 2 or 3 points of a near-term bottom (barring really bad news), but your move should pay off if you can get into a flyer like JDSU quickly.

For what its worth, I trimmed my Dell holdings today as well, for the fourth time in the past week. I now have whittled my Dell position to a level with which I can be comfortable -- a bit more than a market weighting, but not the huge percentage of my portfolio it used to be. Will keep it as a long-term hold, (or longer-term, I should say, since I've had it for three years). I still think it is a great stock, but my watchwords this year are "diversification" and "rolling thunder."

Frank, I am at loss with Dell, an I am looking for the first
stop to get off this train. I will sell starting at 52.30 to 54 and I think it is possible, only if they numbers are right. In the past two to three years they have done
nothing in Europe which is a huge market to advacne their cause. Maybe not thier fault, there is a cultural gap, as
I said in my earlier post. regards, Yaacov
