Globalstar Telecommunications, satellite-based digital telecoms service provider, opened its service to US consumers in the week ending 09 January 2000, on a limited basis. Pricing plans for the US service have also been announced, prior to a planned global commercial launch before April 2000.

Globalstar handsets, made by Qualcomm, will cost USDlr1,500 for US consumers. Globalstar USA (US), subsidiary of Globalstar, will market the service in the US.

Three monthly service plans will be available: a basic service, costing USDlr30/mo plus USDlr1.69/min for calls; an intermediate service, costing USDlr170/mo plus USDlr1.49/min for calls and 100 min of free calls; and a high-end service which costs USDlr370/mo, with 250 free minutes of call time and a charge of USDlr1.39/min for extra calls.

The service is being aimed at niche vertical industry markets. Worldlyinvestor.com, Web site, analyst, David Baker, said that Globalstar's price premium vs cellular services will make it difficult to woo customers.

Bluetooth SIG Firms Unable To Reach
Agreement

RDSL

10 January 2000

The Bluetooth Promoter group, comprising Microsoft, Ericsson,
Motorola, Nokia, 3Com, IBM, Intel, Lucent and Toshiba have
failed to reach agreement about which firms should head up
nine technology working groups.

The nine firms in the Bluetooth special interest group (SIG)
were to announce the nine groups in December 1999 at the
Lotus Developer Conference in Los Angeles, CA. SIG
representatives denied that this was due to rifts in the group
but admitted that secrecy concerns and the need to cater for
nine different agendas could be slowing progress.
