I think I've got it. You're the guy who sits at a small table, smoking too many cigarettes, gazing off into space, and all of a sudden snaps his fingers and writes things down on whatever piece of paper is handy, while distractedly rubbing your head until your hair is messy. (The image is from old movies, my main source of visual frames of reference.) You flip back and forth between invertebrate and edgy. You need Herb because he is connected to the "real" world, and he needs you because you are connected to the "idea" world. You are the one to whom the muses speak, but without the Herbs of the world, you wouldn't have people to listen to your voice. Did I come close?
