Dutch Firm Equant Will Launch
Private Voice and Data Network

By GAUTAM NAIK
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

LONDON -- Equant NV is expected to announce Tuesday that it will launch a private voice and data network based on Internet technology reaching into 50 countries, according to people familiar with the company's plans.

The Dutch company, which provides high-speed phone and data links for corporate customers, has spent the last six months testing the network in 21 cities, people close to the firm said. The new network is expected to become operational next month, they added.

Telecommunications companies like Equant are in a race to provide combined voice and data links to multinational firms that need to connect their far-flung locations. Typically much of this traffic moves through the Internet -- a public and not a very dependable system. Equant plans to offer the same integrated voice and data service over its own more reliable network.

Equant's system incorporates new software as well as Internet-router technology developed by Cisco Systems Inc., said people familiar with the matter. As a result, a corporate customer can bypass public phone companies, such as AT&T Corp. and British Telecommunications PLC, and instead send voice and data traffic over an Internet-like private link supplied by Equant.

One benefit will be less-expensive international voice calls, which could be priced 30% to 50% lower than the rates charged by public phone carriers, people close to Equant said. For corporate clients, the other advantages include greater flexibility and a simpler network structure.

Equant's ability to provide high-quality voice and data links has made it a stock-market darling and also a prime takeover target. Last year the company was shielded from predators thanks to its high stock price and the presence of core shareholders Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Capital Partners and the international airlines that founded the firm in 1949.

That could now change: Both Morgan Stanley and the airlines have already cut their stakes and are expected to reduce their holdings further in the months ahead.http://interactive.wsj.com/archive/retrieve.cgi?id=SB947542438810243670.djm&template=bb-company-news^CSCO

Frank, good move getting back into Cisco, and I hope you got back into Intel (I saw your post saying they were back in your radar screen). Lowering your % exposure to the Q some? Not a bad idea to diversify some.

Tony

Uncle,
Selling stock in companies where great gains have been made and re-buying them sounds like a huge tax Ouch! How do you handle that situation?

For every $1.00 in my portfolio for which taxes have been paid, I am looking at $8.50 that would be subject to Federal and State of California capital gains taxes if I should sell my stock. I want to delay that day (maybe forever) and have that money "work hard" for me, cause I deserve it...humble carl
