Soft Money

Private Internet 'currencies' and other increasingly abstract forms of exchange may replace government notes
.

.
Convenience is the main advantage of the future system, in which the transfer of money will be effortless. A world traveler may never again have to exchange dollars for euros or pesos for yen, since "value" won't be confined to national borders; instead, international "smart" cards will hold value in a microchip. And workers will be able to say goodbye to being handed a paycheck. Just as spending in the future will deal in intangibles, so will earning -- just a slick transfer of data from one account to another.

The touch of a button, or even just a quick scan of the microchip embedded in one's finger, may open the door to the vault that holds their "money." Even pickpockets may have to use new techniques. If they can break the codes that conceal passwords and financial information, they can drain accounts from any distance.
