Well, that, and unprecendented access to the capital markets by vast segments of the population who have no idea what they were doing. It's something capitalism has never seen before. The founding fathers set up an electoral college system for a reason- they didn't trust the masses of stupid people to make rational decisions when acting as a mob. Someone should have made a similar failsafe structure for the equities markets. After this economic violence is over, you can bet they will. Beginning with teaching schoolchildren the evils of speculation. Wouldn't be surprised to see a labor/socialist party elected, either.
