What do you mean by "demoralize Longs"? Are you saying that less parties will go/stay long if the stock finished up not by 5 but by *only* 3 points? To me it sounds silly...

Gee, maybe Martians are involved in this conspiracy too?

A lot of stocks have extremely high volitility on the after market hours where newbies are trading after they come home from work and there isn't a massive institutional trading base or a specialist to keep the market "orderly". I'd be amazed if EMC didn't show sharp swings occasionally at/after the close given that it's a momentum stock with a rabid following.
