Alcatel's U.S. unit to dismiss suit against Samsung

Reuters, Jan 12, 2000 15:44 hrs

DALLAS, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Alcatel USA Inc. (NYSE:ALA), a unit of French telecommunications equipment firm Alcatel (SBF:CGEP), said on Wednesday it dropped its trade secret suit against Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.(KOREA:05930).

Alcatel said both companies decided "it was in their best interests."

Alcatel filed a $425 million trade secret suit against Samsung in early December, alleging that Samsung stole confidential information by hiring nine employees from DSC Communications Corp., a Plano-based telecommunications equipment manufacturer that was later acquired by Alcatel.

Alcatel alleged that rather than reaching a deal to buy the technology the employees worked on, Samsung recruited the workers.

Alcatel also said it dropped the claims against the DSC employees.

Alcatel's shares were up 9/16 at 42-13/16 in afternoon trade on the New York Stock Exchange.
