I've always liked Cosell, and probably would have laughed at his comment, depending upon context. Rocker's comment apparently was malicious, on the order of calling his team mate a nigger.

Now to me such words are really no great issues at all. In fact, the more I say the word "nigger," the more ridiculous it sounds. It just does not seem to have any power. But I must keep in mind how a black person might see the thing. In its historical context the word has great power to harm. The word "monkey" has the same power depending upon the context in which it is used. If a black thinks the word nigger coming from me is an insult, then it is logical that he would retaliate in some way against my use of the word. Has nothing to do with PC.

Should the black not be so uptight? Perhaps, but it is difficult for me to say. I know when the Washington Post claimed Evangelicals generally poor, ignorant automatons I was not pleased and to this day am quite happy when I hear of the Post's decreasing readership and increasing financial problems. You see, the thing depends upon context. I think one should have the right to call a black a nigger if one wants to. But one does not have a right not to be shunned by blacks or their sympathisers.

I was watching the game when Cosell said that. The player in question was 5'8" or 5'9" wasn't he? He really scampered downfield as I recall. I didn't make a racial connection when he said it.

It's ironic they would pillory Cosell like that when he was known for speaking out for black athletes. Those track guys in the 1968 olympics come to mind. Juan Carlos and ... can't think of the other fella, but when those guys raised their fists in the black power salute, this country went ape. They were widely condemned if I recall correctly. But Cosell treated them with respect, interviewed them and gave them a chance to explain their side of the story.

And of course his friendship with Muhammed Ali started when Ali was still Cassius Clay. Cosell recognized early on that Ali was more than just a boxer...

I object to characterizing that as PC. There are reasonable areas of sensitivity, and calling a black guy a monkey is one of them.....
