Thanks Greg, I'm thinking that if power consumption was the key before, perhaps some of the advances in batteries have changed that part of the picture.At least as far as handsets are concerned.

DSP based design vs. ASIC based design

There is no clear difference between the two. Both consist a DSP core, a dedicated logic core, and a CPU core. I don't think that you can draw a clear line between what is a DSP design what is an ASIC design. The two are converging. ASIC has to become more programable, and DSP has to become more resource efficient.
