TimeStep Secure VPN Solution from Newbridge Networks Expands Secure VPN Solution to Support Top Tier Infrastructure Players
KANATA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 11, 2000-- NEWBRIDGE(TSE:NNC. - news; NYSE:NN - news)

Expanded PKI functionality allows customers to use TimeStep Solution with PKI products and services from industry leaders Baltimore Technologies, Cybertrust, Sun-Netscape Alliance, RSA Security, VeriSign, and Xcert

Newbridge Networks (NYSE:NN - news; TSE:NNC - news), today announced enhancements to the TimeStep Secure VPN (virtual private network) Solution from Newbridge Networks to support multiple public key infrastructures (PKIs). PKIs ensure user authentication for the purposes of communication throughout both internal and external networks, providing the foundation necessary for secure e-business applications. The support of multiple PKI solutions enables customers to seamlessly integrate the industry-leading Newbridge(r) VPN technology into their existing PKI infrastructure, or their PKI vendor of choice.

The PKI is increasingly being accepted as a mainstream technology by today's corporations and more importantly, by service providers. At the same time, VPNs have emerged as the killer application for PKIs. By integrating PKI standards-based support (PKCS 10/7/12) into a solid IPSec offering, Newbridge is well positioned to leverage the huge market opportunity.

''The TimeStep Solution from Newbridge Networks gives organizations a proven security offering that combines two superior technologies, public key infrastructure and VPNs,'' says Peter Hussey, president of CyberTrust. ''We are pleased that Newbridge has expanded its support to CyberTrust, allowing our customers to add the best of breed technologies they need for a successful e-commerce deployment.''

The TimeStep Solution from Newbridge Networks works with the following PKIs (using PKCS 10/7/12): Baltimore UniCERT, GTE's CyberTrust, Sun-Netscape Alliance's Netscape Certificate Management System 4.1, RSA Security's RSA Keon, VeriSign's Verisign OnSiteSM managed service, and Xcert's Sentry CA.

''Newbridge is an early adopter to the understanding that PKIs are essential to building large-scale VPNs,'' says Tim Hember, vice president, VPN, Newbridge Networks. ''By implementing standards-based support for multiple PKI vendors, Newbridge is reinforcing its commitment to meeting the needs of service providers and other customers with large-scale applications. It also offers customers the flexibility to protect their investment in their existing network infrastructure.''

The US Navy and US Marine Corps recently completed lab testing of the TimeStep Secure VPN Solution from Newbridge Networks for deployment. A key feature that led to this success was the incorporation of the Department of Defense's (DOD) PKI of choice. This PKI is viewed as a crucial element in authenticating DOD users into the VPN.

Z: "Local Loop Unbundling". Does this include installing DSLAMs and splitters so that third parties can rent facilities from the current telco's? Or is the report referring to something else? Thanks in advance.
