Alias/Wavefront to Develop Maya(R) for Intel's IA-64 Processor

Leading 3D Authoring Tool to Extend Platform Compatibility to New Itanium(TM)

TORONTO, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Alias/Wavefront, an SGI (NYSE: SGI) company, today announced plans to develop a version of its Maya(R)software for Intel's forthcoming IA-64 Itanium(TM) processor, and Microsoft's 64-bit Windows(R) NT(R) operating system. Previously known by the code name Merced, the Intel(R)Itanium(TM) processor uses a 64-bit architecture and offers the robust performance required by data-intensive 3D visualizations and computer graphics.

"We are looking forward to delivering a native IA-64 version of Maya for the digital content creation market. Our film, video and games customers should significantly benefit from the Itanium(TM) processor's highly advanced floating point performance and 64-bit addressing capability," said Jack Moran, General Manager of Alias/Wavefront's Entertainment Business Unit. "We look forward to continuing our close working relationship with Intel."

By extending the commitment to the Windows NT market to include the Itanium(TM) high-end workstation and server markets, Alias/Wavefront's Maya will continue to provide a complete range of high-performance solutions for digital content creators in all segments of the entertainment industry.

"Intel is very pleased that Alias/Wavefront will be releasing a version of Maya optimized to take full advantage of the advanced IA-64 architecture of Intel's Itanium(TM) processor," said Anand Chandrasekher, General Manager of Intel's Workstation Products Group. "Professional animators in the entertainment business, who recognize Maya as a leading tool of the trade, are sure to be thrilled by the outstanding floating point performance that Itanium(TM) processor based platforms will deliver for demanding 3D animation work. Maya users can look forward to a range of Itanium(TM) processor based systems from industry leading vendors in the second half of 2000."

Among the first major software developers to port their technology to Itanium(TM), Alias/Wavefront's Maya will be certified on workstations from a number of industry leading hardware vendors who have announced plans for the production of IA-64 systems.
