Actually, Steve Case merged AOL for estate planning purposes.

I think that he's 40 years old or so. He thought to himself: "Is it likely AOL can maintain the 'valuation standard given to internets' over the next 25 years?" He reached the conclusion: "No."

So, he used the high valuation given to AOL as currency for a top-notch company that will grow steadily for the next 25 years.

While there will be volatility for the next year or so, AOL will remain a first-class company for the rest of our lives with this merger.
