THe reason that software MPEG decode is attractive though, is that it can be implemented very quickly and at low cost, so CUBE can sell chips to the content providers. PC owners are, for the most part, reluctant to buy highly specific add-in cards to get this kind of content. Especially as more and more homes get PCs, where the owners know almost nothing about them except how to surf the net and trade stocks. The new processors are plenty fast to decode DVD (and therefore MPEG), and how many people multitask while watching streaming video? Only power users who may have hardware decoding, but not the millions of users we need to adopt this technology so we can sell those chips to the content providers.
