U.S. Options-Advanced Micro vols, volume stay high

CHICAGO, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Implied volatility stayed high on Monday in options on Advanced Micro Devices Inc. as the stock gained ground heading into earnings.

Implied vols for the January 35s stood at roughly 101 percent. "It's been that way for a few days," a market maker at the Chicago Board Options Exchange said of the high implied vols. "There is nothing but buyers." The stock's one-month historical volatility stood at roughly 59 percent.

Turnover in the multiple-listed option also remained hefty on Monday, and by 11:12 a.m. CST (1712 GMT) some 10,650 calls and 2,350 puts had traded in just the January and February expiries on the four U.S. options exchanges combined.

On Friday, about 30,200 total options traded compared to a recent daily average of around 7,100 contracts.

"Earnings are next week," a market maker at the Pacific Exchange said by way of explaining the high vols and volume.

AMD is expected to report on January 19 that it lost $0.01 per share during its fourth quarter, according to a First Call/Thomson Financial mean consensus estimate.

The California-based chip maker said Monday that computer maker Gateway Inc. has selected its Athlon processor for its Select PC series.

Also on Monday, AMD and 3Dlabs Inc. said they agreed to work together on high-performance workstation graphics products using AMD's Athlon processors.

Shares of AMD were up 2-3/16 at 34-7/8 on New York Stock Exchange volume of 3.1 million. The stock earlier on Monday touched a new 52-week high at 35-3/16. ((Laura Jacobs, Chicago Derivatives Desk(312)408-8750 chicago.derivatives.newsroom@reuters.com))

Kash and thread,

Do not get what's going on....SEG came in with earnings this afternoon. Revenues were down 8% YOY for Q4. Estimates are that Intel's revs will be up only 5% YOY; that's pitiful compared to the rest of 1999 which saw 8-9% growth YOY. Yet Intel is claiming maxed out fabs.

Q4 was supposed to be a strong pc quarter but where did they get the hard drives from...certainly not SEG and how can a 5% increase in revs fill capacity at Intel's fabs. GTW warns and it looks like Dell will as well. Where was all the supposed demand for pcs?

Things do not seem to add up....anyone else feel the same way?

ted

<This is very very bullish>

One thing that has completely caught me by surprise is the strength in K6.

I would have liked AMD to shift more production to Athlon but a cursory look at the retail scene tells me that there will be *a lot* of K6s sold in Q1. Looks like AMD will gain significant market share over Celeron in Q1.
