Should Keyes confuse the meaning of principle and conviction, then he will be inflexible. To be sure this is a risk, perhaps the risk when a principled man works with such severely unprincipled individuals as those in Congress. Nevertheless I think Keyes understands the thing quite nicely, and will be able to maintain principle while compromising on details.

Given the bully pulpit, he will be able to marshal grass root support for much of his agenda, putting Congress' foot to the fire. Taking this cudgel in hand, his skill as a diplomat will help him as he negotiates with the snakes.

I think Carter lacked the character needed to be a good president. This is not to say he was not a "good" man or a man with no character. He simply lacked enough backbone to trust his people and do the right thing. Carter was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Today he is exactly where he belongs, and doing nicely from what I hear.
