"If you are looking at the Web and realize you have to sell advertising to make the new Web media companies work, you need proprietary content to have people go to your channel rather than my channel," said Tom Wolzien, media analyst at Sanford C. Berstein.

Despite the Internet?s promise of generating hundreds ? if not thousands ? of new outlets for content, analysts say Web surfers are heavily drawn to the old media content brands.

"In the clutter that we see in the media and online words, having brand franchises that people know and trust is going to be more important to getting hearing for your content than anything else," said media analyst James Goss at Barrington Research.

The rollout of broadband Web channels also gives media companies a new way to spread the costs of producing content to another audience.

Just as first-run films recoup huge additional revenues from video rentals, and TV shows make big profits in syndicated re-runs, the Web offers a major new revenue stream for old media producers.
