Three Guilty In Boiler-room Scheme

A federal jury convicted three men Tuesday of fraud in connection with what federal agents described as a boiler-room scheme that enticed people with promises of free, low-interest credit cards.

Dennis Klibanoff, Donovan Lehman and Richard Williams will be sentenced on June 15 in Miami. The case against a fourth defendant, Jaimin Shah, was dropped midway through the trial for lack of evidence.

Secret Service agents said the scam led consumers to believe they were getting a Visa or MasterCard with an 11.88 percent interest rate. But after customers paid a fee, agents said, they were sent worthless financial pamphlets and a list of banks instead.

Defense attorneys defended the operation as legitimate, noting that customers were protected by a money-back guarantee.
