Pat, let me tell you a sad story: In 1996 when I was getting into NN I heard of a hot company called Uniphase that felt that fiberoptics was the future. Interesting. Made sense.( speed of light etc etc ). I bought some at $33 US. Held it for about 1 - 2 months, I don't remember. What I do remember though was that it wasn't moving sort of like watching the grass grow. When it hit 37 I decided to take my profits......... Anyway,it is clear now that optics is where it is at. The massive tanking of LU ( who was thought to be an optical leader ) and it's simultaneous mammoth substitution ex-vacuo by NT who is now the de facto optics leader is a silent affirmation by the market of this. You and I have talked about the massive flow of voice-video-data though the world and the need for NN's ATMs to guide it around. However the flow will become soon such a torrent that I doubt ATMs will suffice. I think that the market senses that when they gave optical network switchmakers Juniper the astronomical valuation it has and when CSCO bought Cerent sight unseen, in the box. So that the flow may now just be directed, in mass, simply from a large point A ( New York for example ) to a similarly large point B ( LA ) though giant fiberoptic lanes. And when it gets to point A & B, then solutions will be found for the last mile . ie What i am saying is that with optics it's " shoot first " ( ie connect the big points ), and " ask questions later ", ( how we'll get it to everybody). JDSU: the INTC of optics ; how about the CSCO, one stop shopping of optics? I like that. I like the relatively smaller number of shares floating around. That there is no lock out period to worry about. Coming split. And that Kalkhoven has executed flawlessly from what I can tell. He seems to be following on JChamber's steps. cheers (BTW where is peppe when we really need him? <GGG>) TAMessage #4332 from pat mudge at Jan 12 2000 12:42AM Tunica -- Good to see you here in JDSU. I've been in this stock since it was JDS Fitel and selling for ~$13 CDN. After listening to ETEK's CC, I'm more convinced than ever fiber optics is the best place to be. The primary problems have to do with too much business and how to get manufacturing in place to satisfy demand. Should be interesting to see how the market responds tomorrow.
