I wanted to clarify one more time: even well constructed individual studies in the social sciences are inconclusive, because of the limited samplings; meta- analysis is necessary to establish fairly reliable conclusions; the main informant for the US News article was the person responsible for the most extensive meta- analysis on the issue we were debating, and I had already posted some of his stuff directly. The magazine article was an opportunity to summarize the debate at this point....Also, as for those who persist in referring to studies showing a correlation with beating and dictators and such, there is a maxim in medicine, "the dose makes the poison". Substances that are harmless or even beneficial in smaller doses may kill if administered in high quantity.......
