Intel Unveils Pentium III Xeon Processor At 800 MHz

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Intel Corp. (INTC) unveiled the 800-megahertz Pentium III Xeon Processor.

In a press release Wednesday, the chip maker said the processor was designed for workstations and front-end servers, a class of single- and dual-processor Internet servers for functions such as Web site hosting and electronic-commerce authentication.

The Pentium III Xeon Processor is priced at $901 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Intel said workstations based on these processors offer a 133-megahertz system bus, 64-bit PCI support and other capabilities.

The processor is based on Intel's 0.18-micron process technology, and features a 256-kilobyte advanced transfer cache memory with advanced system buffering.

Later this year, Intel plans to expand the product line with additional speed enhancements and higher cache options.
